Starr King Garden
As a design studio, we were approached by the First Unitarian Universalist Society to reimagine a pocket park in the heart of San Francisco. Our task was to honor the legacy of Thomas Starr King, a historical figure known for his pivotal role in the fight against slavery.
Our vision for the park was to create a serene oasis amidst the bustling cityscape—a place where visitors could find solace and connect with the values of justice, compassion, and sustainability. Drawing inspiration from King's legacy, we sought to design a space that would serve as a tribute to his enduring impact on society.
Through thoughtful selection of materials and landscaping elements, we aimed to evoke a sense of history and significance. The placement of monuments and the careful arrangement of plantings were intended to create an atmosphere of reverence and contemplation.
Our design approach was rooted in the belief that landscapes have the power to inspire and uplift. By creating a space that invites reflection and fosters a sense of connection to the past, we hoped to inspire visitors to engage with the park in meaningful ways.
Ultimately, our goal was to create a park that not only honors Thomas Starr King's legacy but also serves as a symbol of hope and inspiration for future generations. We believe that through thoughtful design and intentional planning, we can create spaces that enrich the human experience and contribute to the well-being of our communities.
